How to Measure Your Roof Pitch (Step-by-Step Guide)

Roof pitch is the steepness of your roof, expressed as a ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run over 12 inches. It directly affects your total material quantity and labor cost – steeper roofs require more materials and take longer to install safely.

Low Pitch (3/12 – 5/12):

Gently sloped roof. Common on ranch-style and modern homes. Easiest and least expensive to work on.

Medium Pitch (6/12 – 9/12)

The most common roof pitch in Austin. Moderate material and labor costs.

High Pitch (10/12 – 12/12)

Steep roof. Requires additional safety equipment and labor time. Higher material cost due to increased surface area.

How to Measure Your Pitch Yourself:

  1. Stand safely on a ladder and access your roof edge, or measure from inside your attic.
  2. Hold a level horizontally against the roof surface. Mark exactly 12 inches along the level line – this is your “run.”
  3. At the 12-inch mark, measure vertically straight down from the level to the roof surface – this is your “rise.”
  4. Your pitch is expressed as rise/12. If your rise measures 6 inches, your pitch is 6/12 (medium).
  5. If measuring from inside the attic, place the level against a rafter and measure the same way

Not comfortable measuring it yourself? No problem – when we come out for your free inspection, we measure everything precisely and include it in your written estimate.

Other Factors That Affect Your Roof Replacement Cost

Our calculator gives you a solid starting estimate, but a final written proposal may differ based on several additional factors. Here’s what can influence the final cost:

Roof Decking Condition

If your plywood or OSB decking has rot, moisture damage, or soft spots, it will need to be replaced before new materials go on. This is common in Austin homes 20–30+ years old.

Ventilation

Proper attic ventilation is critical for shingle longevity in the Texas heat. Ridge vents, soffit vents, and attic fans may need to be added or replaced.

Flashing

Metal flashing around chimneys, skylights, pipe boots, and roof valleys often needs to be replaced during a full re-roof. Failing flashing is one of the top causes of leaks.

Roof Overhangs and Covered Porches

These extend beyond the ground floor footprint but are still part of your roof system. The calculator uses your home’s footprint as the baseline estimate.

Number of Roof Layers

If your home has multiple layers of old shingles, Texas building codes may require a full tear-off before new material is installed. This adds labor cost but produces a better result.

Storm or Hail Damage

Visible or hidden hail damage can affect the amount of decking replacement needed. If you suspect storm damage, an insurance inspection may cover part or all of your replacement.

How Much Does a Roof Replacement Cost in Austin, TX?

Most residential roof replacements in Austin and Central Texas fall between $8,000 and $20,000 for a standard single-story home with architectural shingles. Here’s a general guide based on home size:

  • Small Home (1,200 – 1,600 sq ft): Estimated $7,500 – $12,000 for architectural shingles.
  • Medium Home (1,600 – 2,400 sq ft): Estimated $10,000 – $16,000 for architectural shingles.
  • Large Home (2,400 – 3,500 sq ft): Estimated $14,000 – $22,000 for architectural shingles.
  • Premium or Complex Roofs: $20,000 and above, depending on steep pitch, multiple levels, or premium materials like metal or tile.

These figures are broad ranges. The only way to get an accurate number is a free in-person inspection – which we provide at no cost and no obligation across all of our Austin-area service communities.

Does Homeowner's Insurance Cover Roof Replacement?

In many cases, yes – especially after hail or wind storms, which are common across the Austin metro. Whether your claim is approved depends on your policy, the type of damage, and how the damage is documented.

Altitude Roofing has a significant advantage here: our owner holds an all-lines insurance adjuster license in addition to his GAF Master Elite certification. He performs inspections using HAAG engineering protocols – the same standards insurance companies use. Our reports carry weight with adjusters because they’re produced by someone who has worked on both sides of the claims process.

If you’ve had a recent storm, had a claim denied, or simply aren’t sure whether your roof damage qualifies – start with a free inspection. We’ll give you an honest answer on what we find and walk you through your options.

Frequently Asked Questions About Roofing Costs in Austin, TX

How accurate is the roofing cost calculator?

Our calculator gives you a reliable ballpark estimate based on your home’s square footage, roof pitch multiplier, and material cost per square foot. It’s designed to help you budget and understand your options. Your final written proposal may vary based on decking condition, ventilation needs, flashing, and other factors that can only be assessed in person. We always provide a detailed written estimate after a free on-site inspection.

Most residential roof replacements in Pflugerville range from $9,000 to $22,000 or more depending on roof size, pitch, material selection, and decking condition. Larger homes in newer communities like Carmel or Bell Farms typically run toward the higher end. Standard 2005-2018 subdivision replacements tend to fall in the middle of the range. We provide a detailed written estimate after a free inspection.

For most Austin homeowners, GAF architectural shingles – particularly the Timberline HDZ or UHDZ series – offer the best combination of durability, cost, and warranty coverage. They’re engineered to handle Texas UV exposure, thermal cycling, and hail impact. For homeowners looking for maximum longevity with minimal maintenance, standing seam metal roofing is an excellent investment, especially given the energy savings from reflecting radiant heat.

A professional roof inspection is the only reliable way to answer this. Signs that often indicate replacement is needed include: shingles that are curling, cracking, or losing granules significantly; a roof that is 20+ years old; visible sagging or structural concerns; or widespread storm/hail damage. Signs that repair may be sufficient: isolated damage in one area, a relatively new roof, and intact surrounding shingles. We’ll give you our honest assessment after a free inspection – and we recommend the option that’s right for your home, not the most expensive one.
